Albertfalva City Center
Budapest, Hungary | 2006-2008 | 110 000 m² | Plan
Albertfalva is a riverside area in southern Budapest with significant development potential. ZDA prepared an urban development concept for the 77-hectare study area, addressing the expansion of existing infrastructure, the establishment of a framework for property development and the long-term vision of a mixed-use urban district.
Located in South Buda, on the boundary between Albertfalva and Budafok, the site’s strategic urban position makes it suitable for development as an outer urban centre comparable to the area around Kelenföld railway station. One of the central questions of the study was how to establish both a genuine infrastructural connection and a symbolic link between the new riverside district and Csepel Island.
As part of this vision, the concept proposed a seven-storey residential bridge spanning the Danube. The bridge would represent a new form of urban property development, an architectural opportunity for cooperation between the public and private sectors, and a new landmark for Budapest at the scale of the wider landscape. This long-term vision could define the direction of the area’s future development, while allowing the first phase to operate successfully as an independent project.
The initial development phase, comprising approximately 110,000 square metres, was conceived as a self-contained ensemble of high architectural quality that could also be integrated into the broader urban development concept at a later stage. The morphology and topography of the site were analysed using an urban model, and the building complex was designed to respond to the terrain by forming the northern edge of the valley.
On the site divided by Szerémi Road, the proposed building volumes create a gateway-like urban condition. The two sides are connected by a pedestrian bridge at second-floor level, while the buildings rise towards Szerémi Road, reinforcing the district’s emerging central character. A prefabricated concrete cladding system developed for the façades supports both rapid construction and a flexible approach to the articulation of building volumes and elevations.
