Etele Square Intermodal Center

Budapest, Hungary | 2010-2011 | 105 000 m² | Plan

The concept for the Etele Square Integrated Passenger Transport Building is based on a redefinition of the urban role of the Kelenföld transport hub. Forming the southern frontage of Etele Square, the proposed building accommodates the metro exit, connects the rail, public transport and pedestrian routes operated by MÁV and BKV, and creates a sheltered, transparent and convenient interchange system.

The aim of the project was not merely to create a transport building, but to establish an intermodal urban space that naturally organises passenger flows between Etele Square, the metro underpass, the railway station, the local bus terminal, the tram stop and future commercial developments. In the longer term, the concept also allows for the extension of pedestrian connections across the railway, continuing the pedestrian network of the Etele Square urban centre towards Őrmező.

The U-shaped layout responds to the structural constraints of the metro infrastructure, the planning regulations and the logic of passenger circulation. Two wings adjoin the central passenger hall: one accommodates transport-related and office functions, while the other contains retail and service areas. Covered canopies and transparent, full-height halls provide a protected yet open passage through the urban environment.

The ground-floor passenger hall is directly connected to Etele Square and Somogyi Road, while the gallery level aligns with the elevation of the railway station, enabling an entrance from the MÁV side. The building therefore functions simultaneously as an interchange hub, an urban gateway and a service centre.

The façades are designed to maximise transparency and facilitate orientation. The glazed surfaces of the passenger hall and the elevated pedestrian bridge establish strong visual connections towards Etele Square, the bus terminal and the surrounding green spaces. In the long term, the concept supports the development of an urban sub-centre in which transport infrastructure connects rather than divides.
