Futian Cultural Buildings
Shenzhen, China | 2013 | 16 280 m² | Plan
At the invitation of Shenzhen’s Futian District, we prepared an architectural and functional study focused on rethinking existing cultural and community buildings that were underused or difficult to operate effectively.
As a first step, we mapped the district’s network of cultural institutions, examining the urban role, potential uses and technical conditions of each site. The aim of the study was to reinterpret the buildings not as isolated interventions, but as integral components of a broader cultural infrastructure.
Based on the findings, an individual functional, technical and architectural programme was developed for each location. These programmes formed the basis for the concept designs, which explored new possibilities for use while building on the existing qualities of the buildings, increasing their openness to the community and strengthening the presence of cultural functions within the urban environment.
