Győr Cultural District
Győr, Hungary | 2021-2022 | Plan
A substantial brownfield site awaiting regeneration lies close to the historic centre of Győr, on the former premises of the Rába factory. Its location offers an opportunity to create a new contemporary, culture-led, mixed-use district within the city’s immediate inner zone.
The central element of the development is a cultural square framed by the Cultural Block, which accommodates the city’s principal cultural institutions, and an event hall designed for concerts, youth programmes and other cultural events. These complementary institutions and programmes generate an urban synergy that opens up new possibilities for artistic companies, audiences and local residents.
The concept aims to establish a new and vibrant urban centre through the introduction of cultural functions. An artificial lagoon running through the main square makes water directly accessible once again as part of the urban experience, while creating a connection with the historic city centre and recalling Győr’s once prominent tradition of water sports. Water defines the character of the district not only as a spatial organising element, but also as an atmospheric layer of the urban environment.
The surroundings of the cultural square form a broader cultural district. The architectural quality and community-building potential of the square extend into the surrounding urban fabric and contribute to the regeneration and increasing value of the wider area. As a result, a mixed-use district can develop around the square, where office, residential and service buildings complement the cultural institutions in a balanced proportion.
Shops, services, cafés and restaurants are located on the ground floors of the various buildings, supporting everyday use and ensuring that the district remains active throughout the day. Quiet pedestrian-friendly streets, outdoor terraces and human-scaled public spaces create a relaxed, small-town atmosphere, while the quarter becomes integrated into Győr as a new centre of cultural and economic activity.
