Spiritual Center, Kakasszék

Kakasszék, Hungary | 2014 | 10 000 m² | Plan

The development concept for Kakasszék draws on the qualities of a distinctive landscape of the Great Hungarian Plain, the local tradition of sanatorium-based therapeutic water treatments, and the protected natural environment. The aim of the plan was to create an intellectual and spiritual centre, together with the supporting infrastructure of a new settlement, developed not by overriding the site’s existing landscape, ecological and cultural values, but through a continuing dialogue with them.

At the heart of the concept is Temple Island, surrounded by both natural and newly created bodies of water. The island remains an undeveloped and tranquil green core, where pathways, waterfronts and vegetation provide spaces for meditation, retreat and engagement with the spirit of the place.

The development is organised into three principal functional areas: the Campus Zone, the Residential Area, and the Village and Service Zone. Located along the waterfront, the campus supports the operation of the spiritual university, while the residential area is arranged in a protected setting beside the proposed lakes. The Village and Service Zone accommodates the related urban functions, including the administrative centre, accommodation facilities, a bathing area, and cultural, gastronomic and commercial spaces.

The transport system is designed to preserve the tranquillity of the inner core. Vehicular traffic is restricted to the outer zones, while movement within the settlement is based on walking, cycling and electric transport. The plan provides a long-term, phased development framework for a settlement of approximately 2,000 inhabitants, whose sustainability is founded on the balance between ecological integrity, organic landscape use and community life.
