Pillar Office Building

Budapest, Hungary | 2017-2020 | 52 000 m² | Completed

Composed of four building volumes, the Pillar Office Building establishes a distinctive presence within the surrounding cityscape. The alternation of narrower and wider wings, the gently undulating massing and the rounded corners together create a dynamic yet coherent architectural character.

An important objective in shaping the external appearance was to loosen the continuity of the perimeter-block development. The façades are set back from the street frontage in a cour d’honneur arrangement, while terraces, steps and transitional spaces articulate the individual volumes. Arcades at ground-floor level strengthen the building’s relationship with the public realm and give its urban presence a more human scale.

The building is enclosed by a distinctive curtain-wall façade composed of a rhythm of glazed and opaque panels, complemented by coloured fins. The main elevation is further emphasised by asymmetrical forms and by the spatial tension generated by the acute-angled geometry of the site. The façade system therefore provides the representative appearance expected of a metropolitan office building while supporting a more articulated and open integration of its mass into the surrounding cityscape.
