Richter Chemical Research Building

Budapest, Hungary | 2003-2007 | 21 000 m² | Completed

The Gedeon Richter Chemical Research and Office Building was developed as the research and administrative centre of one of Central and Eastern Europe’s leading pharmaceutical companies. The design aimed to create a building capable of meeting highly complex laboratory and technological requirements, while also supporting advanced scientific research through its spatial organisation and architectural atmosphere.

The complex consists of two elegant wings with distinct operational functions. One accommodates the administrative departments of the pharmaceutical group, while the other contains specialised laboratories designed to meet the most advanced technological requirements. The separation of the two functional units establishes a clear operational structure, while the central space between them provides continuous connections between the office and research areas.

The architectural heart of the building is the generous entrance hall between the two wings, which, through its bespoke glass structure, functions as a distinctive space between interior and exterior. A white, Möbius-strip-like form twists through the hall, serving simultaneously as a gallery, staircase and bridge. These sculptural circulation elements provide flexible connections between the two parts of the building while giving the interior its strong organic and futuristic character.

The NMR laboratory in the rear courtyard required a highly specific architectural solution due to the safety distances associated with its powerful magnetic equipment. The fragmented, more angular volumes of the laboratory units form a counterpoint to the flowing bridges of the entrance hall, while the precise response to technological constraints becomes an integral part of the architectural concept. The building therefore functions both as an advanced research facility and as an architectural expression of Richter’s commitment to innovation.
