Stone Hotel Esztergom

Esztergom, Hungary | 2007-2008 | 31 000 m² | Plan

Stone Hotel is the concept for a 220-room, 5+1-star medical wellness hotel planned for Prímás Island near Esztergom. The design explored the potential for a recreational destination within an exceptional natural setting, combining physical and mental regeneration with the traditions of Hungarian bathing culture and contemporary architectural expression.

Departing from conventional hotel typologies, the programme is divided among a series of freestanding, sculpturally formed building volumes. The complex is positioned in the central part of the island, allowing the floodplain forest along its perimeter to remain undisturbed. A fundamental design objective was to integrate the large-scale hotel complex into the lush, mature woodland with the least possible impact on the surrounding landscape.

The communal functions are accommodated in low-rise buildings nestled among the trees and oriented towards the Little Danube branch, while the guestrooms are arranged in stone-clad residential towers on the Danube side of the site. At ground-floor level, the individual volumes are connected by a glazed circulation system articulated by internal atria, providing guests with a continuous visual connection to the natural environment.

The building and the untouched landscape form a unified whole, both functionally and visually. The floodplain forest extends into the atrium-like recesses between the buildings, while the walking paths and garden pavilions surrounding the hotel become an integral part of the recreational experience. Viewed from the Danube and the city, the complex is primarily defined by the megalithic residential towers emerging above the treetops, creating a restrained yet memorable landmark within the landscape.
